When October comes around, it’s the perfect time of year to take in the splendours of the fall colours while enjoying a few local products. Whether you’re at the cottage, on a hike, or just sitting around a campfire, take the opportunity to spend some quality time with friends and family, surrounded by the vividly coloured leaves.

To take full advantage of the wonderful colours, nothing beats hiking through our beautiful province. Walking in the open air is an activity the whole family can enjoy. Just slip into a good pair of shoes and pack a lunch, along with a bottle of water and a few snacks. Some nutritious snacks you can bring along on your family hikes include nuts (almonds, hazelnuts), dried fruits (apricots, dates), whole grain crackers (wheat, rye), homemade granola bars, whole fresh fruits (apples, bananas), and some UHT milk and/or enriched plant-based drinks (soy, oat) in single 200 ml sizes.

For lunch, you can’t go wrong with a sandwich. A well thought out sandwich can easily replace a complete healthy meal that’s both easy to carry and easy to eat. For some inspiration, here’s a sandwich made with local ingredients, slipped between a couple of slices of 9 Grains Bread from the La Récolte de St-Méthode range (https://boulangeriestmethode.com/en/recipes/fall-harvest-delight-sandwich). This bread is made using whole wheat flour with germ and whole oat flour from Quebec—two local flours that will contribute to your intake of fibre (3 g per 2 slices) and protein (7 g per 2 slices).

Whole wheat is one of the most protein-rich grains… and oats also have several health benefits, notably due to their beta-glucan fibre content. These soluble fibres help reduce blood cholesterol, a major risk factor for heart disease.

After your hike, what could be better than ending the day with the family gathered around a fire, having fun making s’mores with La Récolte de St-Méthode’s Homestyle Bread (https://boulangeriestmethode.com/en/recipes/gourmet-s-mores-with-homestyle-bread). This loaf contains integral wheat flour from Quebec, along with several ground ancient grains—like sorghum, buckwheat, and quinoa. It provides 4 g of fibre and 9 g of protein per 2-slice serving.

This bread is therefore more nutritious than many white loaves that do not contain whole grain flour. In fact, whole grains provide more nutrients—notably, more fibre and protein—than refined grains do. Fibre is particularly beneficial to your health. Studies show that a high fibre diet can help reduce the risks of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. By choosing breads made with whole grain flour, you take advantage of many health benefits.
